At the end of the Alley was the campus of the Temple of the Goddess of Mercy. It was big and well used. Mei would bring fake money and incense to worship the Goddess many times a year, precisely almost every full moon of each month, if she could. Always with sincerity and faith, she prayed for the good to come and hoped that one day the plum of happiness would blossom. Yet with uncertainty, she would draw lots and let diff erent fortunetellers read to see if there was any change, miracle, twist or hint in her fate. But to her dismay, diff erent fortunetellers had told her very diff erent things, either too fortunate or too unfortunate. She couldn’t possibly just choose one of the versions to believe. Therefore, she believed them all, only with more uncertainty.
